1892-10-17 (124lbs) Charlie Tilley w rtd 4 (20) George Franklyn, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: H. G. Cousins. Despite a lack of title billing, Tilley’s 124lbs title claim was at stake in this one and after a slow start he began to place the straight left on Franklyn’s face as and when he wished. Coming back and concentrating on closing his man down in the third, Franklyn had Tilley nonplussed at times with his rushes before the latter settled down in the fourth when going to work with both hands. Although it was quickly apparent that Franklyn did not relish Tilley’s assaults, especially to the body, it was still a great surprise when the Bermondsey lad turned away and retired himself in the middle of the session.
