1892-10-24 (102lbs) Bill Mortimer w co 15 (20) Bill Bolton, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the English 102lbs title, with a championship belt as a prize, a cool and collected Mortimer (100) picked his punches better from the start as Bolton (101), down at the end of the third, appeared impetuous at times. In the ninth Mortimer opened a cut over Bolton’s left eye, and the latter had to fight furiously to keep his rival at bay, which he did for several sessions before he was battered down five times in the 13th. Bolton showed terrific gameness on coming out for the 14th as if nothing had happened, and even though he was floored three more times he still tried to take the fight to Mortimer. It was all over for Bolton in the 15th when he was dropped on three more occasions before being counted out while still trying to get up.
On 2 December, Mortimer informed George Beach that he would be prepared to accept a fight at 101lbs, and two weeks later agreed to a ringside weigh-in, £100-a-side, knowing full well that Beach was struggling at the weight.
