1892-11-21 (130lbs) Arthur Valentine w rtd 9 (20) Maurice Phillips, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the English 130lbs title, although not recognised as such throughout much of the country, Valentine (129½) had too much in his locker for the game Phillips (128¾), gradually wearing him down. Patiently waiting for Phillips to burn himself out, which he eventually did, Valentine made his move in the eighth, and from there through to the end of the ninth he belaboured his rival with blows from head to body. Slumped on his stool with nothing left it was no surprise when Phillips was retired.
A few days later Stanton Abbott claimed to be both the 130 and 132lbs English champion. That was followed by Tom Ireland winning a championship competition when outpointing Ted Ware over four rounds at the Hope Public House, St Luke’s, London on 28 June 1893.
