1892-12-08 (140lbs) George Dawson w co 20 (finish) Doc O’Connell, Californian AC, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Billy Jordan. Weighing 140lbs to O’Connell’s 139 in a match made at 140lbs, Dawson added the latter’s title claim to that of his own on his victory. The fight had been a equal one for 14 or 15 rounds before Dawson really got to work, and from the 17th onwards O’Connell dropped down many times in order to avoid the heavy punches coming his way. Finally, in the 20th, after Dawson caught up with O’Connell a series of left leads followed by a heavy right uppercut to the jaw knocked the American out cold.

When Tommy Ryan failed to meet him the following March Dawson retired and accepted the position of boxing instructor at the Chicago Athletic Club, a post he held until 1924.
