1892-12-19 (112lbs) Nunc Wallace w co 24 (finish) Joe Portley, St Andrew’s Hall, Westminster, London, England. Referee: Robert Watson. Promoted by Bob Habbijam and billed for the English 112lbs title, there was plenty of good boxing as well as solid hitting on behalf of both boys. Round six saw Portley’s eye beginning to close, but he boxed on as though there was not a problem while Wallace (110½) tried to visit the damage whenever possible. The 11th saw the most exciting action to date, both men being down, and it was Wallace who moved ahead in the scoring from there on as Portley tried to stay with him. By the 20th Portley (111) was looking thoroughly demoralised, and in the 23rd a tremendous left to the jaw had him over in a bad way just as time was called. Somehow, Portley made it for the 24th, but Wallace gave him no respite, sending his rival down to be counted out about a minute into the session after smashing in punch after punch to head and body.
