1892-12-19 (126lbs) Harry Spurden w pts 20 Bill Reader, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the English 126lbs title, it was an excellent contest between two technicians skilled. As the fight wore on it was the younger Spurden (125) who came to the fore as Reader (125½) began to tire, and from the end of the 17th round began to be caught by punches he would have once avoided. It was Spurden’s left to the face and ribs that were standouts at this stage of the fight, and in the final session he upped the pace to leave Reader almost standing as he romped to a clear points win.
Two other men to win championship competitions at 126lbs were Jack Fitzgibbon (who outpointed Arthur Beattie over four rounds at The Coliseum, Leeds on 7 October 1893) and Dan Murphy (who outpointed Fred Mansford over three rounds at St Andrew’s Hall, Westminster, London on 21 April 1894).
