1892-12-20 (130lbs) Young Griffo w pts 12 (20) Jerry Marshall, Darlinghurst Skating Rink, Sydney, Australia. Referee: Mr Reynolds. Despite initially being made at 126lbs it was Griffo’s 130lbs world title claim that was up for grabs in this one after he came in almost two pounds over the weight and did not look to be in the best of condition. Well contested, neither man got the upper hand in what was a clever contest throughout, but at the end of the 12th the police intimated that it had gone on long enough and asked the referee to decide on a winner. On announcing that Griffo had won the decision there were both groans and cheers; the general opinion being that Marshall had done as well as Griffo and a draw would have more acceptable.

Marshall, who could have claimed the 126lbs title by forfeit, was so dissatisfied that he immediately challenged Griffo, £500 a side, anywhere outside Sydney and within a reasonable time.
