1893-01-16 (124lbs) Jem Stevens w pts 20 Bill Corbett, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Stevens staked his 124lbs English title claim in this one, despite a lack of title billing, and from the opening bell Corbett stated his intent when taking the fight to his opponent. Having put Stevens down with a right-hand counter in the second round, Corbett continued to press but before too long he was being outboxed and by the tenth his left eye was swelling fast. Although Stevens was countering the onrushing Corbett again and again, the latter would not put off and right through to the final bell he kept up the pressure. A difficult fight to score, measuring Stevens’ classy boxing against Corbett’s non-stop aggression, the decision ultimately went to the man from Bethnal Green who had retired by the end of the year.
