Line 1: Line 1:
1893-01-23 (132lbs) Stanton Abbott w rtd 18 (20) Sam Baxter, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Although not reported as an English 132lbs title fight in all papers, it was generally recognised as such and as the two men were the leading lights at the weight. With both fighters cool and collected at the start, and neither wishing to make a mistake, the contest was of a clever and sportsmanlike nature. By the tenth round Abbott appeared to be ahead but in that session Baxter made a big effort before being boxed off and although he looked a likely winner at that stage of the fight by the 12th his rival was back at the helm. From then on Baxter gradually weakened and by the 17th Abbott was making all of the running. Coming out for the 18th with purpose, Abbott soon had Baxter down from a body shot and after getting up and being steadily worked over the latter held out his hand in token of defeat. Not long after the fight Abbott sailed for America, arriving there on 17 March. Men who challenged all England for the title included Arthur Valentine (January 1893) and Darkey Barton (May 1893).
