1893-02-06 (122lbs) Johnny Griffin w co 7 (finish) Torpedo Billy Murphy, Coney Island AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Johnny Eckhardt. In a title match made at 122lbs, the finish came after a left-hand smash to the body dropped Murphy (120½), who tried frantically to regain his feet before being counted out. Earlier, Griffin (121) had been down twice in the second and again in the fifth, while Murphy, who came in as a replacement for Bill Baxter, broke his right hand in the third and was also down in the fifth. Both men were bleeding freely at the finish.
