1893-02-13 (110lbs) Alf Greer w rtd 9 (20) Jim Knowles, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Tom Anderson. Contested at express speed, both men swapped heavy punches right from the opening bell before Greer (111) finally got the drop on Knowles (109) in the fourth round. Down again in the fifth, twice in the sixth, and three times in the seventh, Knowles appeared spent, but in spite of coming back strongly in the eighth he went down twice towards the end of the session without being hit. Cautioned by the referee, Knowles came out for the ninth, looking almost refreshed, before a string of body punches put him down again. At the end of the ninth it was clear that Knowles had nothing left, and it was no surprise when he was pulled out of the contest by his corner.
Despite being over the limit, and with no title billing on the table, Greer still claimed the English 110lbs title following his win, but as with Alf Sparrow it fell on deaf ears.
