1893-03-13 (102lbs) George Beach w rsc 20 (20) Bill Mortimer, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Billed for the undisputed English 102lbs title regardless of Croot’s claim, both Mortimer (100½) and Beach (100½) put on a great show of clever boxing and heavy hitting in a contest that looked like lasting the distance going in to the final round. At that stage, although Mortimer’s left eye was the worse for wear he had earlier denied Beach’s best attempts to finish him, but after taking a left swing to the jaw he was dropped. With the end of the contest in sight Beach was not going to let Mortimer escape and after he had floored the latter again the referee stepped in with just seconds left.
Despite the result, Mortimer continued to refer to himself as the champion.
