1893-04-17 (142lbs) Mysterious Billy Smith w co 2 (finish) Tom Williams, Coney Island AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Johnny Eckhardt. According to the San Francisco Chronicle and New York Herald this was an advertised 142lbs title bout for 20 rounds or more, with both men inside 140lbs. Although Williams came to the ring with a win over fellow-Australian, George Dawson, the American 142lbs welterweight championship would only be fully settled after Smith met Tommy Ryan. Reckoned to be a terrific contest with everything packed into a few moments, Williams was knocked down by a heavy right-hand uppercut and counted out at 2.35 of round two.
