1893-06-19 (118lbs) Dave Wallace w rsc 5 (20) Mike McGough, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Articled to box at 118lbs, both men started at a furious pace and at the end of the opening session it was clear to see that Wallace (117) was the stronger of the two. The next two two rounds were also of a heavy nature and in the fourth McGough (117), gamely keeping up the pressure, was fast running out of steam, being dropped twice before the bell saved him. Coming out for the fifth, McGough had nothing left and after a minute of sheer torment at the hands of Wallace the referee stopped the fight.
On 22 August 1893, Billy Plimmer (117¾) outpointed George Dixon (116¾) over four rounds in Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA and gained himself a world title claim which he passed up.
In February 1894, Joe Portley became yet another claimant for the 118lbs English title.
