1893-10-02 (124lbs) Jack Fitzpatrick w rsc 8 (20) Charlie Tilley, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Tom Anderson. While there was no actual 124lbs English title billing advertised it was recognised as such by those who professed to have a good knowledge of the sport. Certainly both fighters gave everything they had, and regardless of Fitzpatrick (123) being the favourite Tilley (123) was not deterred. In the fourth round Tilley almost had his man over following a tremendous right to the jaw, but Fitzpatrick survived and was soon fighting in earnest. After swinging Tilley down in the sixth, having hurt the latter with a right to the side of the head, Fitzpatrick went for the finishing line in the seventh. Tilley was in real trouble the moment the round got underway, eventually being dropped four times before bravely making it to the bell. That he came up for the eighth was remarkable, but when smashed down twice more he was quickly rescued by the referee.
From thereon Fitzpatrick fights at a higher weight, despite being recognised as the English 124lbs champion until the end of 1894.
