1893-10-17 (102lbs) Jimmy Gorman w co 8 (finish) Jack Levy, Olympic Club, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
17 October (102lbs) Jimmy Gorman w co 8 (finish) Jack Levy, Olympic Club, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Referee: John Duffy. Billed for the world 102lbs title, with Levy labelled the holder, Gorman appeared to be in front when getting home with a heavy right to the jaw which left the former flat on his face and counted out.
Levy had earlier said that he would meet Joe Bennett, among others, in defence of his English 100lbs title, which was somewhat surprising as he was hardly recognised on the British side of the Atlantic and brought about immediate responses from Bill Mortimer, Mike Small and George Beach, who all challenged Gorman to decide the world title. On 21 April 1894 at the St Andrew’s Hall, Westminster, London, Walter Croot outpointed Bill Bolton over four rounds to win a 102lbs English championship competition, while Patsy Sheehan, on seeing that Pedlar Palmer was unable to make the weight, claimed the title in September 1894.
