1894-01-08 (132lbs) Stanton Abbott w rtd 15 (finish) Jack Falvey, Metropole Club, Providence, Rhode Island, USA. With the weights set at 132lbs or under, this contest belonged to Abbott’s world title claim at the weight. The Providence Evening Bulletin reported that Abbott showed his experience when allowing Falvey to do most of the leading for the opening 11 rounds, while he countered with blows to head and body. At the end of the 12th session honours were even, but from thereon Abbott took over, picking up the pace, varying his attacks, and steadily working on Falvey’s ribs. Following much clever infighting, in the 15th Abbott went for the finish and although Falvey did not go to ground he was badly hurt and not fighting back when his seconds threw up the sponge. Having taken out American citizenship in April 1894, Abbott continued to claim the English 132lbs title, stating that Arthur Valentine was now in the 134lbs weight class and was unable to make anything less.
