1894-03-19 (135lbs) Arthur Valentine w pts 20 Jim Burge, Raglan Music Hall, The Borough, London, England. Referee: Robert Watson. Made at 135lbs and thought to involve Burge’s Imperial British Empire title claim, Valentine (134) showed top form right from the start as he gave a brilliant display of left-hand hitting. Burge (133) certainly lived up to his ‘Iron Man’ monicker and at times Valentine seemed sick of hitting him. Floored in the ninth, Burge was almost down again in the tenth and in the 11th there were cries for him to turn it in but despite taking terrific punishment he kept going right to the end.
There could only be one winner and that was Valentine, who claimed the English title at the weight before losing his grip on it when beaten by Pat Daly at 134lbs on 22 May 1896.
In the interim, Harry Webster (who challenged all England on 1 November 1894), Jim Thompson (who won a championship competition when forcing George Sullivan to retire in three rounds at the Central Hall, Holborn, London on 17 November 1894) and Daly all vied with Arthur Callan, another claimant, to decide the English 136lbs title.
