1894-06-27 (128lbs) Harry Spurden w rtd 22 (finish) Darkey Barton, Bolingbroke Club, Clapham, London, England. Referee: Robert Watson. Although advertised as an English 126lbs title fight it was really at catchweights and Spurden claimed the 128lbs title on winning. Well contested almost throughout it was only after Spurden’s right eye commenced to swell in the 14th round that the latter stepped up the pace. In the 20th, feeling that he had the measure of Barton at that stage, Spurden went to work with a vengeance and in the 22nd after having his rival down three times the fight came to an end with just a few seconds of the session remaining. At that point it was clear that Barton was in real trouble and when he raised his hand in token of defeat the referee accepted it.

For Spurden there was little left and when beaten by Jack Fitzpatrick at 126lbs on 6 February 1895 his career at the top level was all but over.
