1894-06-29 (130lbs) Young Griffo drew 20 George Dixon, The Casino, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: John Eckhardt. As both men were inside 130lbs, Griffo’s 130lbs world title claim would have been at stake in this one and although Dixon (123) dropped him in the opening round with lefts and right to both head and body he remained upright from thereon. Not only that, but at times he gave Dixon a boxing lesson and in the 18th the latter’s left eye was cut. There was a furious exchange of blows in the 20th as both men looked to find the winning punch, but it was to no avail and a draw was a fair result.

From there on in Griffo boxed at an increased poundage.
