1894-08-06 (146lbs) Danny Needham w rsc 5 (10) Louis Groeninger, Hercules AC, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Referee: Jim Hall. Although billed for the welterweight title of America, no weights were reported and as Needham was fighting at around 146lbs at this moment in time that was quite probably the limit set. According to the Galveston Daily News the fight was a hot one with much blood spilled and was eventually stopped by the police at the end of the fifth round. The referee then awarded the fight to Needham. By this time it was apparent that Needham’s career was coming to an end and following a further eight contests, of which he won just two, he had retired.
