1894-08-27 (140lbs) Jack McAuliffe w pts 10 Young Griffo, Coney Island AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Maxie Moore. The New Orleans Daily Picayune reported that the crowd thought Griffo (133½) had won the world title in a match made at 140lbs despite McAuliffe (139½) receiving the decision. The newspaper reports of the day confirmed that Griffo outboxed McAuliffe virtually all of the way, his jab keeping the latter at bay while piling up points.
