1894-09-13 (146lbs) Tommy Ryan w co 4 (finish) Billy Layton, USA. Referee: Andy Kisimer. Held on a sand bar in the middle of the Missouri River (near St Joseph, Missouri) on neutral territory after the contest had been banned from taking place in the town, it was reported in the New York Herald as a welterweight defence for Ryan (146). The fight was ended when Ryan, who had set Layton (146) up, sent in several heavy blows before a right under the ear forced a count out.
