1894-09-26 (158lbs) Bob Fitzsimmons w co 2 (finish) Dan Creedon, Olympic Club, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Referee: Jim Duffy. Billed for the 158lbs title, Fitzsimmons (155½) quickly took the initiative in the opening round when forcing Creedon (157) back, and early in the second dropped the latter with heavy rights to the jaw. On his feet, but in a poor condition, Creedon was punched about from head to body before a smashing left to the chin sent him down to be counted out at 1.40 of the session.
By early 1896 it was clear that Fitzsimmons, unable to make 158lbs anymore, had set his sights on the heavyweight title. Regardless of Fitzsimmons continuing to call himself the middleweight champion, Tommy Ryan, who had already beaten the former titleholder, Nonpareil Jack Dempsey, claimed the crown.
