1894-10-08 (96lbs) Ernie Brady w disq 13 (15) Charley Gledhill, Percy Street Cottage, Newcastle, England. Billed for the English 96lbs title, prior to the seventh round Gledhill had a good lead but during that session he began to weaken. In the eighth both men were carrying damage to their features, and in the ninth it was all Brady, who was 4½lbs overweight, as Gledhill began to fall apart before being floored by a right to the jaw and saved by the bell. Gledhill came back in the tenth, but the referee had to step into the ring in order to stop the men from holding continuously, both having been badly punished as they fought tooth and nail. Although Brady seemed the stronger in the 13th Gledhill was still dangerous, but following him being guilty of a palpable foul he was disqualified.
While Gledhill was able to claim the title by forfeit he was quite prepared to offer Brady a return at the weight, but despite the match being made for 24 December it was called off, the latter then being matched against Westminster’s Jack Maloney at 96lbs.
