1894-12-14 (135lbs) Kid Lavigne w co 18 (25) Andy Bowen, Auditorium AC, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Referee: John Duffy. Billed for the 135lbs championship of America, the unfortunate Bowen (133), having been floored by a right to the jaw and hitting his head heavily on the floor, never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at 7.15am the following morning. Prior to the finish, the outclassed Bowen had taken a steady beating from Lavigne (135) and had been dropped in the 17th.

On 11 April 1895, Lavigne drew with Jerry Marshall over eight rounds at the Triangle Club, Chicago, Illinois in what was a pre-arranged draw if both men were still standing at the final bell. Lavigne was thought to scale 134lbs to Marshall’s 124.
