1895-01-18 (146lbs) Tommy Ryan w rsc 3 (15) Nonpareil Jack Dempsey, Coney Island AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Tim Hurst. Billed for the title, Dempsey (142) was in such poor condition, having been dropped and hit at will by Ryan (145), that the referee pulled him out of a contest that proved to be his last. Even before the referee acted the crowd were calling for it to be stopped, some even thinking that Dempsey was drunk. Less than a year later he was dead, the victim of tuberculosis.
