1895-01-21 (140lbs) Dick Burge w co 4 (20) Tom Williams, NSC, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Although the contest was made at 142lbs, Burge (138lbs) successfully defended his English version of the 140lbs world title against Williams (139½), who was counted out in the fourth round after being dropped by a heavy right to the jaw. Burge had gradually been getting on top, Williams slipping down in the third, and the winning punch was magnified by the force of the latter’s head hitting the floor.
After the bout, Burge was presented with a solid gold belt prescribed to the ten-stone champion of the world and it was reported in the Sporting Life that he would be foolish to ever box below 140lbs again as he had outgrown the weight class.
