1895-03-01 (140lbs) Joe Walcott drew 15 Mysterious Billy Smith, Cribb Club, Music Hall, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: Barney Aaron. Made at 140lbs, Walcott held on to his claim at the weight against Smith and although he was dropped to his knees in the fourth he came storming back to keep the latter at long range for several rounds. Smith fought Walcott almost to a standstill in the seventh and eighth, but was then forced to take crushing blows to the head as his rival came on strong. It then slowed considerably. On reaching the end of the 15th, Smith was asked if he would like to carry on to a finish but would have none of it.

Walcott, who stated afterwards that he was fouled throughout, soon moved up among the 142lb men.
