1895-03-02 (140lbs) Arthur Valentine w disq 5 (12) Jim Perry, Central Hall, Holborn, London, England. Referee: J. McNeil. Although there was no title billing attached at 140lbs, the stipulated weight of the contest, it was felt that the winner would have a claim to the English title however tenuous. It was a strange fight with Valentine (140) being nonplussed by Perry’s tactics for much of the time, and by the third round it had turned into a hugging match. After Perry (137½), the worst offender, had been cautioned several times by a referee fast losing his patience he was disqualified in the fifth.
