Billed as a catchweight bout, with the weights not to exceed 158lbs, although his opponent appeared to be the stronger of the two Diamond (154) boxed extremely cleverly, showing an excellent defence and countering Varley (158) whenever given the opportunity. The last three sessions saw Diamond assert his superiority, cutting out most of the work, and even when he was brought down by Varley his responding blows more that put the balance in his favour. The contest was later reported to have involved the English 158lbs title.
