1895-04-22 (126lbs) George Johnson w disq 2 (20) Tom Causer, Central Hall, Holborn, London, England. Referee: George Vize. Billed for the English 126lbs title, with both men stated as being within the weight, it is unlikely that Causer was anywhere near that poundage especially when it was reported in the Sporting Life that Johnson was outweighed by at least 20 pounds. Whatever the truth, it did not deter Johnson from taking the fight.
Right from the opening bell it was clear that Causer was looking for a quick win and having stepped into Johnson he knocked him down in a heap in his own corner. With Johnson back on his feet, and the two men going hell for leather, it was Causer, continually warned for holding, who was coming off worse. Coming out for the second round, already cut over the left eye, Johnson immediately got stuck in and soon had Causer down. Unfortunately, from there on in it turned into a brawl. After Johnson went to the canvas with Causer on top of him following some unpleasant scenes not in keeping with the sport the latter was disqualified.
