1895-05-06 142lbs) Arthur Valentine w pts 10 Charley Johnson, Central Hall, Holborn, London, England. Referee: Jack Jones. Despite being an international bout at 142lbs it was not over a championship distance, although Valentine’s claim was still at risk. As a contest it was poor, with Valentine merely rushing in to get a punch or two off before rushing around the ring to avoid what was coming his way. When Johnson got too close for comfort, on occasion Valentine threw himself to the floor and several times he held the American round the waist while hitting Johnson with the right. Unfortunately for Johnson the referee, who was a local, never once warned Valentine for use of foul tactics and ultimately gave him the decision rather that calling the whole thing off.
