1895-11-26 Jem Smith w disq 9 (20) Dick Burge, Bolingbroke Club, Clapham, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Smith (178) successfully defended the English title against Burge (143½) in a contest that should never have been made, with the champion carrying more than 30 pounds advantage in weight. Right from the start Smith went after his rival, knocking him down once in the third round and five times in the seventh prior to coming up for the ninth session. It had been all one way with Burge just not heavy enough to hurt Smith and order to take a beating in virtually every round the challenger went down on one knee in order to avoid taking more punishment. Smith made it clear in the ninth that he was aiming bring matters to a close and to that end he had Burge over twice and all at sea and when the latter went down again without taking a punch the referee finally disqualified him for repeatedly going down without being hit.
