1895-11-26 Jem Smith w disq 9 (20) Dick Burge, Bolingbroke Club, Clapham, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Smith (178) successfully defended the English title against Burge (143½) in a contest that should never have been made, with the champion carrying more than 30 pounds advantage in weight. Right from the start Smith went after his rival, knocking him down once in the third round and five times in the seventh prior to coming up for the ninth session. It had been all one way with Burge just not heavy enough to hurt Smith, the challenger going down on one knee in virtually every round to avoid taking more punishment. Smith made it clear in the ninth that he was aiming to bring matters to a close, and to that end he had Burge over twice and all at sea. When Burge went down again without being hit the referee finally disqualified him for repeatedly using that tactic to save himself.
