Line 1: Line 1:
1895-12-11 (126lbs) Tom Wilson w pts 15 Bill Corbett, Oxford Street Gymnastic Club, Manchester, England. Referee: George M. Wells. Made at 126lbs, Corbett got away well when forcing the fight before his rushing tactics worked against him when he went straight over the top of Wilson’s shoulder in the third round. Denied a foul by the referee, Corbett continued to chase after Wilson, who was beginning to box a smart fight on the retreat, and in the fifth the former was dropped by a solid right hand to the chin. Although Wilson was the better boxer and scored well at times, he was almost finished off in the 13th by a rampant Corbett before being awarded a very narrow points decision. Wilson took over Corbett’s flimsy English title claim but went nowhere with it.
