1896-01-28 (98lbs) Ted Beach w disq 12 (20) Jack Maloney, Social Club, Kennington, London, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. Billed for the English and world 98lb titles, Westminster’s Maloney (98) gradually found himself being outboxed by Beach (96¾), and although coming back well in the sixth and seventh rounds he was unable to build on it. By the ninth it was clear that Maloney had to get to close quarters in order to do some damage, but he seemed unable to avoid Beach’s left hand. The fight came to an end in the 12th when Maloney was disqualified. Having continued to clinch after being told to break several times, he left the referee with no other option.
