1896-02-03 (134lbs) Arthur Callan w pts 20 Arthur Locke, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Although not reported as such, Callan stated that this was a defence of his English 134lbs title claim even though there was a lack of billing to that effect. Having started cautiously, by the second round both men were getting their punches off but it was Callan who was the more successful, putting Locke down with a right to the ribs in the fourth. The fighting was fairly even from thereon, Locke dropping Callan in the ninth with a right to the jaw before the latter came back hard to win the decision despite being put down again in the 19th. Callan continued to challenge all England at the weight for the next two years, but by the end of 1896 was effectively fighting in a higher weight class.
