18 February (102lbs) Bill Bearwish w rtd 6 (finish) Sam Goodchild, School of Arms, City of London, England. With both men inside 102lbs, Bearwish’s English title claim at the weight had to be at stake, but with Goodchild at least seven pounds the lighter man he found it hard to keep his rival at bay. The fifth round saw Bearwish eventually catch up with Goodchild, and a severe blow to the jaw had the latter over with no chance of beating the count before the bell to end the session rescued him. After being carried back to his corner Goodchild was still in a bad way, and despite his seconds feverishly working on him he was unable to respond to the bell starting the sixth and was retired. Following this, both Fred Edwards and Charlie Smith challenged all England.
