1896-03-02 (102lbs) Mike Small w co 5 (20) Joe Gates, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the 102lbs English title, although nothing much was done in the opening session it was Small who started the second round better, jumping on Gates from the bell. From there on it was give and take with Small looking the stronger, and in the fifth following a continuous barrage a right to the jaw sent Gates down to be counted out.

On his victory, Small challenged the world. In May, Small was reported as being willing to defend his English title against Harry McDermott, Charlie Taylor, Ernie Brady and Ted Beach, prior to Harry Ashley challenging all England in November.
