1896-04-20 (114lbs) Ernie Stanton w rsc 6 (20) Ted Daley, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Matched at 114lbs, Stanton (113) made the better start when landing several heavy blows to the body, before visiting Daley’s jaw with regularity in the third. In the fourth Stanton finally had Daley over, and although the latter got to his feet he’d had all the fight knocked out of him. When the fifth commenced it was Stanton who, not surprisingly, made all the running, and with Daley being punched from pillar to post the referee came to his rescue prior to the bell ending the session.

Although there was no billing as such, Stanton claimed the English 114lbs title immediately afterwards. However, by 13 October he had moved up in class and was fighting at 118lbs.
