1896-05-18 (154lbs) Charles Kid McCoy w disq 6 (15) Mysterious Billy Smith, Suffolk AC, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: Bill Daly. Reported in the Boston Post as being for the championship of their weight class, with both Smith (150) and McCoy (153) starting slowly there was little action during the first three rounds. Regardless of that, however, it was clear that Smith was using foul tactics from the beginning, and in the sixth, having been warned several times, he hit McCoy on being told to break and was disqualified.

Following the bout McCoy stated he would immediately be issuing a challenge to Bob Fitzsimmons, whom he still recognised as champion.
