1896-05-23 (122lbs) Tommy Dixon w rsc 12 (15) Frank Zimpher, Princess Theatre, Toronto, Canada. Referee: Yank Sullivan. Forcing the fight all the way, Dixon always appeared to have matters in hand while Zimpher kept out of trouble by constantly holding on, moving at speed, or by clever ducking. Groggy in the eighth, Zimpher also had his left eye closed in the ninth but continued to take all that Dixon could throw at him right up until the 11th. In the 12th it was clear that Dixon had been told to close the fight down and after Zimpher had got up twice from knockdowns the referee finally stepped in. Dixon continued to challenge the world at 122lbs on winning at the weight, Frank Erne preferred, but his claim counted for little and was quickly forgotten. In England, George Wood won a 122lbs championship competition when outpointing Steve Smith over eight rounds at the New Adelphi Theatre, The Strand, London on 18 November.
