1896-06-01 (135/138lbs) Kid Lavigne w rsc 17 (20) Dick Burge, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the 138lbs world title and known that Burge would have difficulty in getting below 140lbs, it was hardly a surprise that he came in considerably weakened. From the opening bell it was Lavigne (134) who did the forcing, swinging in rights and lefts to the ribs, and pushing Burge (136) before him. Burge, who was initially a huge favourite, was swamped with punches and after being down twice in the 16th he only just made the next session. However, following a terrific left to the body and a right swing to the head Burge was dropped flat on his face in the 17th and on getting up he was rescued by the referee. Following the contest Lavigne had a strong claim to the 135lbs title as well, while from thereon Burge boxed at a more sensible weight.
