1896-10-12 (116lbs) Pedlar Palmer w pts 20 Johnny Murphy, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England
12 October (116lbs) Pedlar Palmer w pts 20 Johnny Murphy, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the world 116lbs title, in what was a brilliant fight Palmer (114½) fully lived up to his nickname of ‘Box o’ Tricks’ when skilfully outscoring Murphy (115) all the way. The American was no slouch, but he was outspeeded and out-thought throughout as Palmer darted in and out, barely taking a punch. Even when the Englishman tired Murphy was unable to take advantage, hitting thin air at times, but he gamely stuck to his guns and received much applause for his display.
On 13 October 1896, Ernie Stanton challenged the world over 20 rounds at 116lbs and was eventually accepted by Palmer.
