1896-10-26 (114lbs) Jim Williams w pts 20 Tom Turner, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Made at 114lbs both men started cautiously during the opening four rounds before things livened up with the light-hitting Turner being in front by the 12th. From thereon, however, Williams took over right through to the final bell and well deserved the win.

Despite there being no title billing attached, later gossip gave Williams (114) as winning the English 114lbs championship following his victory over Turner (112½).

The following month both Young Moran and Paddy Mahoney challenged all England at the weight.
