1896-11-06 (118lbs) Solly Smith w rsc 8 (20) Willie Smith, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Billed for the world 118lbs title, it was the American who looked to be the most dangerous, and in the third round Willie was forced to his knees after taking several rights and lefts to the head. By the sixth Willie seemed unable to keep Solly at bay, being held against the ropes before going back to his corner in a weakened state. In the seventh it was all Solly, who after having Willie down twice in that session, hammered away at the Londoner so ferociously in the eighth that the referee eventually stopped the fight when the latter was staggering around and unable to defend himself.
Following his victory Solly Smith moved up to 122lbs on his way to winning the world title at that weight.
