1896-11-16 (94lbs) Joe Nicholls w co 4 (10) Tom Watson, Excelsior Baths, Bethnal Green, London, England. Referee: Mr Stanley. Advertised for the English 94lbs title, but not reported as such, Watson, the taller of the pair, started better before being punched all over the ring in the third round. Although Watson tried to get back into the contest, in the fourth he was being met by straight punches that put him on the back foot. Giving his opponent no respite, when Nicholls followed up his good work he quickly had Watson at his mercy, it being no surprise when the latter was put down and out later in the session.
While Nicholls never substantiated his claim, Fred Stout, the winner of an Excelsior Baths competition, was challenging all England at the weight by January 1897.
