1896-11-25 (146lbs) Tommy Ryan w disq 9 (finish) Mysterious Billy Smith, Empire AC, Maspeth, Queens, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Tim Hurst. Following his defeat at the hands of Charles Kid McCoy, despite both men being articled to make 154lbs it is doubtful whether Ryan had much credibility as the welter champ thereafter, especially when you take into account that he was unable to make 142lbs (the key welterweight limit in America’s eyes) any longer. Although the Mirror of Life reported it as a catchweight contest, the New York World gave it as a world title fight and was thought to involve Ryan’s 146lbs claim. There were no knockdowns and not a great deal in it, but Smith was eventually thrown out by the referee after ignoring countless warnings for hitting low and not breaking when told to do so. While Smith had done most of the leading, Ryan, his left eye badly cut in the eighth round, showed a sound defence.
