1896-12-07 (138lbs) Harry Webster w pts 20 Owen Sweeney, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Made at 138lbs, Webster (134) had taken the lead by the halfway stage thanks to his left jab, despite Sweeney (132) being the main aggressor. In the 11th and 17th, Sweeney had Webster groggy from blows to the jaw but on both occasions allowed his rival to recover and the decision was a worthy one.

A day later Webster claimed the English title at the weight.

On 17 December, Alf Bannister challenged all England, but was unable to make a match worthy of the championship.
